Kitchener-Wilmot Hydro Inc. was recently awarded an Employer of Distinction Award from Conestoga College for its support of co-op students.

The award is presented to top employers who have provided high levels of support to the school and its students.

“Supporting student learning is very important to Kitchener-Wilmot Hydro,” says Wilf Meston, Vice President Operations at Kitchener-Wilmot Hydro. “By giving students the opportunity to learn hands-on from our team of highly-skilled industry professionals, we can help set them up for success in the future.”

Kitchener-Wilmot Hydro has been a long-time supporter of the co-op program at Conestoga College. The utility typically provides four co-op opportunities each year for students in the Powerline Technician program, and has hired seven graduates from the program into its Powerline Apprenticeship program.

The utility also provides students with co-op work experience in departments ranging from operations and lines crews, to engineering, to safety, to environment and energy.

“Co-op students make a full contribution to the service we provide,” says Meston.

Going beyond co-operative learning

Offering co-operative learning is only one way Kitchener-Wilmot Hydro supports students. The utility funds two education grants for students in Conestoga College’s Electrical Engineering Technology and Energy Systems Engineering Technology programs, offers internships and summer student positions, and also donates equipment and materials, including a double bucket truck, which allow students to get practical, hands-on training using real-world equipment.

In addition, Kitchener-Wilmot Hydro employees are active participants in Conestoga College’s Program Advisory Committees, attending tradeshows, apprenticeship forums, and supporting computer-based training programs.

“We are honoured to receive this award,” adds Meston.
